Let's Get Technical

Image
Last class we discussed as a group the planning for aspects like props and costumes. This class we discussed a more technical side. We talked about how editing would work. We also talked about who would do the editing. Since we have to embed the titles it will be more complicated editing that the most experienced of our group should handle. Macy and Noura both have more experience and skill than me in editing so they said they will do it. I will still have input and review the drafts before the film is perfect. We plan on using the editing software of iMovie because that is what everyone is most familiar with and it isn't complicated to use. With that being said, if we cant do what we need to on this app we will find a new way to edit the film.  After editing we talked about our plan for the camera. Who would film it? What shots should they focus on achieving? We will probably end up all doing some filming and taking turns, but Noura will be the head camera controller. She chose th...

Now We Wait

Image
We finally decided to film next week. This means that all we can do now is wait for next week to come. We spend our time in class preparing as much as we can. We hope filming goes as smoothly as possible and prepping will help insure that.  First we decide on who is going to be in the film. We know that everyone in our group will be in it, but we need more of an ensemble. Macy invited her close friend Taylee. Noura also might be able to invite another one of our friends. We also realized we need to ask Macy's brother to play the brother in the film.  With that decided, we move on with our prep. Next we have to choose costumes for our characters. The film takes place at a sleepover. That being said, pajamas is the obvious choice. We also decided the brother can just wear everyday clothes. That is everyone who needs a costume so we will ask all of our actors to bring their pajamas to wear.  Props was the final thing to discuss. We already filmed the popcorn scene, but we st...

Reviewing Our Progress

Image
Now that Macy is back from traveling, we can get to work. We started by showing her the popcorn scene we filmed, to see if she liked it. She didn't have any notes, but we realized one problem. Since we are filming the rest at Macy's house, the layouts will be different and might not blend well. This just means we might have to re-film when we do the rest of the short film. It is good to have already though incase we run out of time.  With everyone back and staying we finally properly lined up our calendars to film. Noura and I realized that we can film after school now, which we couldn't do before. This is because lacrosse season is over, which means no practice everyday. This freed up our schedules immensely, and took away some stress over when to film. We still have the problem of needing it to be dark for a scene, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue since it is only one scene. We will just have to film that scene last. This feels weird to do since it is the ope...

Starting to Stress

Image
We are struggling to find time to film. Macy is travelling and since we planned to use her house we don't know what to do. With the deadline coming up we need to make sure we film as soon as possible. In the meantime though my other group mate Noura and I filmed what we could alone. I went over to her house on Wednesday and filmed the scene with the popcorn. We were in her kitchen and realized it was the perfect time. We got our phones out and decided who would act and who would film. I ended up being the one in front of the camera. We found microwave popcorn in her pantry and put it into the microwave. Noura recorded me taking out the fresh popped popcorn and putting it in a bowl. I said my line and followed the directions of the scene we had made in our storyboard and script. Noura turned off the camera and saved the video. We reviewed it and filmed it twice more to get it just right. Without Macy, we couldn't film any more scenes so we were done for the day.  We tried to c...

Such Busy Schedules!

Image
This week, Macy came back. This means we can finally get our filming started, yay! Well, we can if our schedules all line up this weekend. We thought about filming during the week but it is the middle of lacrosse season right now and Noura and I are on the team. This means that we have practice after school everyday and two games a week. Macy isn't in lacrosse but she plays instruments. This means, she has band rehearsal very often after school. This leaves only weekends free, and we are all usually busy so finding time to film has been a challenge. We decide to start planning now so that it works out and we can have a set date on our calendars. After going over our plans for this upcoming weekend we decided that we were all going to be very busy. My family is out of town until Sunday, but Macy is going to the Renaissance Festival on Sunday so Saturday is the only day that will work. This means that I need to find transportation that I wouldn't usually use, but it is worth it....

Starting the Process

Image
Before any good film, comes preparation and planning. Through the many steps we've taken to prepare for this 2 minute opening sequence film, my favorite step was researching the title designs of other horror films. It really showed me how all the editing and choices directors make contribute to the overall feel of movies. Even the smallest of things from the very beginning of the film make a difference. I am excited to also do this with the film we are making. All this research has actually inspired me and sparked a passion in directing and making films. So, I am excited to start filming and putting together this opening sequence. We were planning on starting this past weekend but there were complications regarding location and group mates. We decided last week that we would film at my group mate Macy's house. She was out of town this week, so we couldn't use her house and were out of a place to film. This also meant Macy couldn't film with us and her part is important....

Storyboard: Watching it come together

Sheet 1:   The film starts with shots showing the house where it takes place, and the main characters having a sleepover. They are doing basic things like pillow fights an d making popcorn.     Sheet 2:   They finish getting the popcorn and return to being a group of girls in their bedroom.     Sheet 3:   An eerie mood is starting to be created with foreshadowing and focus on the door, but eventually cutting back to the girls dancing and having fun.     Sheet 4:   They settle down and try and decide on something to do. One of the girls suggests Charlie Charlie .     Sheet 5:   They set up and play the game. The lights flicker and tension in the film is high, but then we see a shot of one of the gi rl’s younger brother playing with the lights.     Sheet 6:   The girls yell at the little boy and tell him to stop bothering them. They then go back to a birds eye view shot of them playing the game more. ...
