Planning!

Image
Hey there! My group and I have started the planning process for how we are going to film our short film.  Schedule- Days to Film: Saturday 2/3, Saturday 2/10, Saturday 2/17 (if necessary) Times to film on each Saturday 11:30 am to 4:00 The dates are Saturdays that we should all be open and able to film on during hours where the sun is up, since all of our scenes are in daylight. If we finish filming on schedule there would be almost a month (2/18-3/15) for us to edit and make any changes or re-film. Location- Lola's House/Street to film during the day scenes of main character at home and the car accident. Galleria Mall to film main character going throughout their day Lola's Room to film hospital scenes Participants- Samantha Price, Lola Mackie, Jack Lynch, Tanner Martin, Macy Martin, Nate, Eva These are all participants who will help with filming; they will each wither hold the camera and assist in that way, or play characters on screen.  Health and Safety: To keep our group s

Short Film Research: A Woman of No Importance

Image
Hey there! Another short film I researched was A Women of No Importance. This film was about an undocumented single mother who has has a hard life and finally takes control of it. Her store manager overworks her and blackmails her until she is able to blackmail him back. This short film is only seven minutes long however it tells a very real and dramatic story incorporating many common things found it drama films. The film sparks so many emotions starting from sad to mad and to proud while also leaving an uneasy feeling at the end. Many dramas end in a way you don’t want or expect them to as this short film did. In this film unlike the others I researched had much less dialogue and more digestive sound such a car noises and people. This was to show how the woman felt weak in the society she was living in and didn’t have anything to say. There was also many camera angles and shots that are found in drama films. For example there were many closeups on the women’s face showing when she w

How to Make a Short Film

Image
The video "How to make a short film" by film riot will act as a helpful tool. This video gives our group a good sense of what well need to do in creating our short film. Most of this is in the preparation and setup that allows the story to come through within the short amount of time. It says not to write something that wont fit the resources that are available to us. Our short film should be written having in mind the actors as well as the access to equipment we have. We would not be able to perform huge cgi shots or anything from the sky as we don't have the equipment for it and we should plan accordingly. Another important aspect of the film that we should focus on is tone. The video goes over tone as it relates to camera positioning as well as lighting and setting. The tone should be appropriate throughout or else it will lose legitimacy. as for the casting when it comes to this video it says to make sure to get out of them what is needed and we will have to take t

Comparing 9, the short, and 9,the full-length movie

Image
The short film "9" provides a brief yet captivating glimpse into a mysterious post-apocalyptic world, introducing viewers to ragdoll-like creatures surviving in desolation. 9, the protagonist, navigates this dangerous landscape, and the narrative is marked by brevity and a sense of enigma, leaving much to the audience's interpretation. In contrast, the full-length film "9" expands upon the foundation laid by the short. It delves into a more elaborate and detailed backstory, exploring the origins of the robotic creatures and intertwining themes of creation, responsibility, and the consequences of technology. The extended runtime allows for a deeper exploration of the characters and their interconnected stories. Character development in the short film is minimal, focusing on 9's survival instincts with limited insight into his background. The full-length film, however, provides a canvas for more profound character exploration. Motivations, fears, and relatio

Short Film Research: Push to Enter/Drama

Image
Hello! Continuing my research of short films, I decided to watch the short: Push to Enter by Anthony Nicolau. This short is a mere 11 minutes, but in those 11 minutes the story and emotions portrayed on screen take viewers on a relatable journey. The film is about a delivery man going through the monotony of day to day work and interacting with rude people. He is given an opportunity to better his life when he discovers keys a customer has left in their door, but could he betray his morals? This journey of morality and desperation both the main character and viewer go on display the talents of director and creator Nicolau. With intense shots showing the main character's intrusive thoughts the audience is truly shown rather than told about the internal battles the character is battling. Internal battles are a large theme in drama films as it often relatable to real people, which arises emotion in viewers. Like in this film for example, struggles with morality because of desperation

Short Film Research: Mutt/Drama

Image
Hey there! Another short film I watched and researched in the drama genre was the film Mutt. This short film was very straightforward. Although the short film is only 13 minutes, it still grabs the audience's emotional side and tells an in depth story. The plot is on addiction and is a well known topic to everyone. The topic can be related real world problems people face all of the time. The short film is based on a man who is an alcoholic and his family is trying to convince him to go to rehab. The short film is a drama which is clear from the acting, sounds, editing, and etc.  The common sound used in this film was diegetic sound and dialogue like yelling. The use of diegetic sounds helps to add more emphasis on some of the characters physical state.  For example, as Micheal, the alcoholic, is drinking the juice, the effect of hearing the big gulps help to show that he may be an alcoholic. It adds a more exaggerated effect to the scene. The dialogue in this short film is a lot o

Short Film Research: Traitor Night/Drama

Image
Hey there! The first short film I researched was a drama called Traitor Knight. This short film is set at a college fraternity house. In this film a brother in the house almost killed a student by making the student due a pledge task.  The student is in the hospital after falling off the roof of the frat house.  With the fate of the house and their college careers at stake, frat brother will turn on brother. This film uses many common conventions found in other drama films which makes it a drama.  A common sound used in this film were diegetic sound. For example, this film used diegetic sounds when Hunter was throwing things to make the scene more dramatic and intriguing to the audience. The use of diegetic sounds in this film helps add more exaggerated effects on the characters emotions. They also incorporate a lot of intense dialogue. For example, Hunter, the boy who gave the pledge task to another guy, got very upset when he found out he was kicked off the fraternity.  This is use

Comparing La Jetee, the short, and 12 monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
After watching the video, La Jetee (1962) vs 12 Monkeys (1995), I am able to compare this short film and full length movie. This video details not only the difference in plot and story told by each film, but also the intent and execution which has a large effect on audience. I learned about how even though La Jetee was only audio and still photos the unique story inspired many people and works since it was created in 1962 and is very comparable to 12 monkeys and has stood the test of time. The immense ability to story tell and evoke emotions in the audience qualifies it for many as a short film or, un photo-roman and not a simple slideshow of pictures. Chris Marker was able to tell an incredible story about memory and the passage of time in a short 28 minutes, while 12 monkeys tells a similar story with a full length movie, this however does not mean that 12 monkeys is a better film. I learned from this video about how the film was able to expand on plot and include mystery and thrille
