Movie Conventions Research: Fear Street Part 1: 1994

 1. What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

This movie has a very classic protagonist, who seems to be under qualified to compete with and beat the monster of the film. Thriller movies often have these characters, and this movie follows this convention by having teenagers fight an evil force that has scrutinized their town for centuries. Another element of the thriller genre this movie has is the general mis-en-scene. This movie is set in a very dark and spooky town with many shots done at night. As well as suspenseful scoring and common camera angles and movement used in the genre. Some of these are close-up shots and tracking shots which create suspense.

  • 2. What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?

The movie uses realistic clothing and props which create realism. I like this because it increases suspense and is something we are going to implement in our final project. Thriller movies are often known for their realistic settings and characters to make the audience feel connected to the characters and potentially think it could happen to them. Both are creative ways to make the movie scarier, which I think is very smart.

  • 3. What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

This movie had many gory and violent shots and plot lines. This is a common element in thriller movies, but personally I enjoy more psychological scares. I think that it allows for more creativity in writing and directing as well as more advanced plot lines making them less predictable. The predictability of thriller movies often bores me and doesn’t appeal to me, making them more psychological and less violent can help with this.
