"Speeding" Through Production
Contrary to the title of this blog post, this scene took the longest to film. After we finished planning and filming in the bedroom and bathroom we moved outside to the car. We realized that our original idea for the car scene didn't work that well, so we had to try a couple of new options. We knew that we had to incorporate a reflection, because that is how the masked figure is seen. Originally, we were going to use the reflection in the car window but when that wasn't working we decided to make the scene more like the main subject running away in a panic. This meant that she now had to be in the car and trying to drive away. This affected our choices for mirrors to use to see the masked figure.
First, we tried using the rear view mirror. This would mean that I, as the masked figure, would sit in the backseat while the main character, Macy, rushes into the car and gets ready to go by adjusting her mirrors just to see me. This idea was good because then it would motivate her to get back out of the car, and it would just be a cool shot. We came across problems with this idea however, the back of the car was too dark and the zooming was hard to do. Being able to see Macy and the mirror close enough to see me in the background we had to move the camera a lot and be careful to not see Noura filming in the mirror too. The main problem though was the lighting. With the car interior being black, and the masked figure wearing all black and a black mask, it was very hard to see me sitting in the backseat. We filmed a couple of shots like this but looked back on them and decided you couldn't really see what we wanted you to see, so we had to go back to the drawing board for a new idea.
Our next idea, was to use the side mirrors on the car. It was bright outside, and if we could figure out how to move the camera then it would work well. The scene was now that the main character rushed into her car and looked over to see the masked figure outside in her side mirror when she closes the door. I went outside to stand while Noura and Macy figured out the best way to film the scene. I mostly just waited outside the car and moved if they needed me to. Eventually they got the shot that worked and the car scene was done!
Finally, we could move on to the last scene.
